Contemporary Jazz. Year-Round.
From its very first edition, Timișoara Jazz Festival defined its artistic direction by bringing together leading voices of contemporary jazz, the Romanian jazz scene and a new generation of local musicians.
Held in 2006, the first edition welcomed Esbjörn Svensson Trio, one of the ensembles that would redefine European jazz in the 2000s, Tord Gustavsen Trio, led by the Norwegian pianist who would become one of the defining voices of Nordic jazz, and Eberhard Weber, joined by Reto Weber and Nino G, presenting one of the most influential innovators of European jazz.
The Romanian jazz scene was represented by Anca Parghel, one of the country's most important jazz artists, while the performance by Trigon introduced a dialogue between jazz and the musical traditions of Eastern Europe—a direction that would remain present throughout the festival's evolution.
At the same time, the presence of the Timișoara-based band Bright White Line, made up of young musicians at the beginning of their artistic journey, anticipated one of the festival's enduring commitments: supporting emerging artists and creating opportunities for the local scene to engage in dialogue with leading international jazz musicians and projects.
